The fact that Edith graduated from both high school and college in the early 1900’s should not be taken for granted. Formal schooling was particularly rare in the rural communities of Colorado where Edith spent her youth. Highlandlake had only a grammar school. Edith wanted to further her education, so she took a position as governess in nearby Longmont. There she attended the newly opened Longmont High School. After graduating from Longmont High School, she taught school for two years just north of Greeley, Colorado. By September 1908, at the age of twenty-three, Edith was able to save enough money to enroll at Colorado Agricultural College in Fort Collins. She completed her studies a semester early (1911 - fall semester) with a degree in Domestic Science as a member of the class of 1912. Twenty-two students graduated in June 1912.

The life patterns of women were altered in many ways by their access to secondary and college education, often lengthening the period between girlhood and marriage. And if women chose to marry, they often married later than those who had not. Edith was twenty-seven years old when she and Orville married. By then, she had graduated from Longmont High School, worked as a teacher, and graduated from Colorado Agricultural College. Edith’s education afforded her opportunities to enrich her life with knowledge, experiences, and self-confidence.
