Edith May was born on an icy winter day on February 21st, 1926. She was a welcome surprise for her parents, both of whom were now forty years old, and a wonderful addition to their family. Her older siblings, Gertrude (age 14) and Kenneth (age 7) were thrilled to have a baby sister.
At the time of Edith May’s birth, the Babcock’s lived at 1021 South Crockett Street. It was a very little wood framed house in the West Texas town of Sonora. It had a front porch and three rooms inside: a kitchen and two bedrooms. The home had no indoor plumbing, so to get water they had to pump it from a well outside. There was no electricity or gas in their home, so they heated water on the wood fired stove until it was nice and warm. The Babcock’s grew most of their own food in their vegetable garden. They also had a plum tree and a pecan tree. Both trees provided delicious fruit and nuts. They even had a grapevine growing along the fence. The Babcock’s raised chickens and also had a goat. Edith May’s mother sewed all the family's clothes by hand and with her pedal sewing machine.

Edith May loved her wicker rocking chair. When she grew up and had children of her own, the rocker made its way to their home. It was refurbished in 2016 and given to Edith May’s daughter, Diana Kokernot Britton, with hopes it would be handed down to her daughter, Stephanie, one day and then on to future great grandchildren.
